It’s in the early hours of the morning and I am standing slouched over my bathroom sink, staring into my own eyes. I see fear and worry about the day to come. I begin whispering to myself statements, such as, “I’m a confident badass and I am going to nail this interview.” Slowly, my voice gets louder and I am standing tall. My hands are on my hips and I am not only announcing the words I speak, but I am firmly believing them. I carried that confidence throughout the day, through my interview, and landed the position. One of my many stories on the power of affirmations.
What are affirmations?
An affirmation is really anything you state or think. This includes our internal dialogue with ourselves, also known as self-talk, can be seen as a constant series of affirmations we repeat all day. These can be both good and bad. More often than not, this self-talk does more harm than good. We think or say things all of the time, such as, “Man, I’m an idiot” or “There’s no way I am capable of that.” It can become standard practice to affirm negativity all day long, thus creating our reality around those thoughts.
When we actively bring positive affirmations into our lives, we shift the trend. We begin to open the door for change, for opportunity, for abundance, love, and joy to enter into our lives. We take control over our subconscious and fight for our right to seek the lifestyle of our dreams.
Positive affirmations help us to fight against the limiting beliefs we created throughout our childhood and adolescence. They’re called “limiting” because they hold us back from our desires. We have the power to rewrite our beliefs, but we have to actively work to change our dialogue. Bringing affirmations into your life can help you to direct the change you need to happen in your life.
Affirmations vs. Incantations
Personal development guru, Tony Robbins, often talks about the importance of practicing incantations, not affirmations. He believes in using our physiology to truly embody the words we say makes a huge difference in how well they work for us.

How I Use Affirmations
I use affirmations every day in a variety of ways. For me, enjoying a variety of different practices makes it more fun and engaging, but I know others who need to keep their affirmation practice in a strict routine to make sure they are keeping up with it. Here are ways I use affirmations:
- Repeating them out loud – I enjoy doing this in the shower, but it works even better when you can be looking at yourself in the mirror
- Chant them in meditation – Often, in savasana or a simple meditation practice, I will pick a phrase I want to concentrate on and repeat it to myself over and over again. This not only helps keep my brain focused, but I start to feel the words becoming part of my normal thoughts.
- Write them down – EVERYWHERE. I enjoy writing different affirmations in my daily planner or on post-its around my house or office. My favorite? Writing on my bathroom mirror with an Expo marker because it reminds me to read it to myself “face-to-face”.
I have looked up affirmations on Pinterest for certain mindsets I am looking to obtain. I listen to YouTube affirmation meditations for my needs – abundance mindset, love mindset, etc. Other times, I sit with myself for a bit and write out the words I am looking for. There is no right or wrong way to pick the right affirmations for you.
